The Independent Type is a card type introduced in Lost Kingdoms. Most of the Independent type cards from the first game were changed to the Helper type in Lost Kingdoms II to differentiate them from those that directly attack.
The total number of Independent monsters per game is 48 in Lost Kingdoms, 52 in Lost Kingdoms II, and 44 in RUNE II, the Japanese version of the sequel.

Trivia
- Out of all the types in the Lost Kingdoms series, the Independent type is the type that has the most ex-members, with there being a total of 30 ex-Independents in the Western releases of Lost Kingdoms II and 38 ex-Independents in the Japanese version known as RUNE II. All but one of these ex-Independents were changed into Helper types, with the Hydra changing into a Summons type instead.
- The Giant Bee, Griffon, Hand of Fire, and Hand of Pain from Lost Kingdoms were all replaced with new Helper type monsters in Lost Kingdoms II. This makes the Independent type the type with the most replaced monsters.
- While the Fairy card is a Summons type in Lost Kingdoms, early screenshots show it was originally planned to be an Independent type. If the Fairy's typing stayed as it was originally intended to be in the first game, it would have been another of the Independent types who were changed into Helpers in the sequel.
