"The disappearance of a small forest was the first sign of the approaching evil. One morning, villagers awoke to find a wall of fog where the forest had been. Some men that ventured into the pitch black mist were never heard from again...
It would not take long for the mist to enshroud the entire village. Where there had once been life now there was nothing but mist which turned day into night.
By ancient covenant, the rulers of the Five Kingdoms had banned all interaction between their nations. Now, the Five Kings abandoned their isolation and met to look for a solution. Sadly, none could offer a plan to defeat the fog.
Terrifying rumors spread throughout the land. Some whispered tales of an ageless evil reawakened..."

Find the Runestone
A dark fog encircles the Castle of Alanjeh. The Princess races to the Royal Treasury to keep the promise she made to her father."
– Alanjeh Castle level description, World Map
An Alanjian Warrior scout runs towards the throne room. He stumbles inside as the doors open, then he kneels while giving an urgent report to Katia, the Princess of Alanjeh, who is sitting on the throne during the absence of her father, King Feobane.{| class="quote" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="border:1px solid white; background:#f8e9ae; tcolor:black; -moz-border-radius:7px; padding:0; margin:.5em 1em .5em 1em; width:auto"

You and your heirs are charged with the task of guarding the Runestones for all eternity.
Honor your duty and you shall be rewarded with everlasting prosperity."
– Another tablet on a wall in the Royal Treasury
Once Katia opens the chest in the Royal Treasury, the Runestone will attach itself to her hair. Afterwards, two hostile
Skeletons will appear, teeth chattering and sabers in hand. She turns around as she hears them, then backs up frighted once she sees them. Before they can attack, a voice calls out to Katia and Birdman card materializes and spins around as it floats in place before her.''

"Guardian of the Sacred Covenant: The Power of the Cards flows in your blood. Unleash their power!"
– Unknown Voice
After the voice stops, she grabs the card and uses it. A Birdman appears in the air. It slowly descends. Then, as one of the Skeletons attack, the Birdman strikes it with a thrust of its spear, killing the monster in one blow.
The screen transitions to the first battle of the game where Katia will have to fight the remaining Skeleton. Just before the battle starts, a textbox explaining how to fight will appear.{| class="quote" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="border:1px solid white; background:#f8e9ae; tcolor:black; -moz-border-radius:7px; padding:0; margin:.5em 1em .5em 1em; width:auto"

"Did you get the cards? Good, then let's be off.
You're not exactly the most fearsome warrior in the Kingdom…
I don't suppose you have a burly brother stashed away somewhere?
So be it. Even the ugliest oyster may contain a beautiful pearl…
Although you look more like the pearl than the oyster…
Who am I, you ask? I'm the only person that can teach you how to use those cards you found in the Treasury.
You'd better come with me if you want to stay alive!
Come now, my little Guardian of the Covenant… You just leave everything up to old Gurd."
– Old Woman, a.k.a. Gurd
After Gurd is done talking, the mission ends.
SpoilersAfter the mission at Alanjeh Castle, a new location shows up on the World Map. Before it can be visited, a textbox will appear. "Princess Katia of Alanjeh has defeated the monsters that threatened the Castle.
Her Victory provides little relief. Despite all attempts to stem the tide of mist, more areas fall to the Black fog each day.
No one knows where it comes from or why it has appeared.
Unless the secret of the black fog can be unlocked, the entire world will fall into darkness.
Entrusting the defense of the Castle to her knights, the Princess sets forth on a quest to save the world.
Her only companion on the journey is the mysterious old crone Gurd."

"Now let's see, Katia, wasn't it? You have much to learn, Your Highness...
The Guardians of the Runestone are given the power to command monsters, through the Cards of Power.
That power is the only chance we have of defeating the evil loosed upon the world.
Whether you like it or not, you must stand up and fight!
First, you will have to learn how to control the monsters. I will teach you the way of the cards.
This place is full of goblins... And that makes it the perfect place to start your training.
Are you ready? I don't give fancy lectures. You'll figure it out once you see those goblins coming."
– Gurd
After Gurd's speech, Katia can start exploring the plains. Before the road is a sign.{| class="quote" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="border:1px solid white; background:#f8e9ae; tcolor:black; -moz-border-radius:7px; padding:0; margin:.5em 1em .5em 1em; width:auto"

"In order to use a card, you need power. You get that power from Magic Stones.
You will be able to collect Magic Stones when you attack monsters.
If you run out of Magic Stones, you can still use cards… But it will drain your life force.
Magic Stones are part of your power: whenever you see one, take it."
– Gurd
Gurd vanishes yet again and another battle starts, this time against two monsters: a Man Trap and a Mandragora. After the battle Gurd will reappear again.{| class="quote" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="border:1px solid white; background:#f8e9ae; tcolor:black; -moz-border-radius:7px; padding:0; margin:.5em 1em .5em 1em; width:auto"

"… Cursed goblins! They better not be around when these wounds heal, or they'll be sorry!"
– The Alanjian Warrior sitting on the log by a red chest
On one side of the left path is a road blocked off by a wooden fence. In front of it are two stones engraved with messages and another sign between them.{| class="quote" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="border:1px solid white; background:#f8e9ae; tcolor:black; -moz-border-radius:7px; padding:0; margin:.5em 1em .5em 1em; width:auto"

""Card Attributes"
In battle, icons appear near each enemy monster, in the shape of Fire, Water, Wood, or Earth.
These icons indicate the monsters' attributes. for each attribute there is an opposing attribute.
For example, Water is strong against Fire. Fire beats Wood, Wood beats Earth, Earth beats Water.
So, if you wanted to beat a Fire monster, you would use a card with a Water attribute.
The eye-shaped icon is used for creatures classified as attribute-neutral.
Neutral creatures are not effected by attributes at all."
– The first engraved stone
{| class="quote" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="border:1px solid white; background:#f8e9ae; tcolor:black; -moz-border-radius:7px; padding:0; margin:.5em 1em .5em 1em; width:auto"
|style=color:#000; text-align:left;padding:0 10px;"|
"During battle, cards are displayed with with and Attribute and Type icon.
The Type icon will be in the shape of a sword, a dragon, or a spell, and denotes the card's Type.
A card with a sword icon will call up a Weapon-type monster.
When you call up a weapon-type monster, it will materialize right on top of you, and attack
whatever is in front of you. Weapon-type monsters disappear immediately, but unlike other monster
types, they can be called up more than once. Lizardman is an example of a weapon-type monster.
Cards with a dragon mark call up Summons-type monsters.
Summoned monsters take your place in combat, then use all of their power in one attack.
A Birdman is an example of a summon-type monster.
Cards with a spell mark on them call up Independent-type monsters.
An Independent monster will continue to fight until its power is depleted.
The Man Trap is an example of this type of monster."

|style=color:#000; text-align:left;padding:0 10px;"|
"Alright, listen up: Monsters and cards have something called an "Attribute."
You can't just go around using cards willy-nilly and expect to survive. You must think about attributes.
I'm only going to explain this once, so listen closely:
There are five monster attributes: Fire, Water, Wood, Earth, and Neutral.
Fire beats Wood, Wood beats Earth, Earth beats Water, and Water beats Fire.
Neutral-type creatures are very rare. They aren't affected by attributes at all.
Ignore monster attributes at your peril! Don't come crying to me when you run out of cards!
Furthermore, during a battle, a 'Type' icon is displayed on each card.

""Deck Points"
You cannot edit your deck of cards after the start of a mission.
However, any new cards you have acquired during your mission can be added to your deck at a Deck Point.
You are standing next to a Deck Point now.
You can also recharge your health at Deck Points, so they're nice even if you don't have any new cards."

"If you don't have the right cards in your hand, you can throw cards away.
Use this ability with care—a card thrown away in battle cannot be used again in the same battle."
– Gurd
Katia fights another battle against two Hobgoblins. Afterwards, Gurd shows up to tell her something different than usual.{| class="quote" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="border:1px solid white; background:#f8e9ae; tcolor:black; -moz-border-radius:7px; padding:0; margin:.5em 1em .5em 1em; width:auto"

After a while Gurd stops Katia one more time.{| class="quote" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="border:1px solid white; background:#f8e9ae; tcolor:black; -moz-border-radius:7px; padding:0; margin:.5em 1em .5em 1em; width:auto"

"Up this path, you will find the boss of the Goblins. Remember what I have taught you.
Now go… Teach him what a Princess of Alanjeh can do!"
– Gurd
Gurd stops following Katia near the Goblin Fort, knowing the Princess can handle herself now. Before entering the goblin's base of operations is a sign identifying what it is.{| class="quote" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="border:1px solid white; background:#f8e9ae; tcolor:black; -moz-border-radius:7px; padding:0; margin:.5em 1em .5em 1em; width:auto"

"Goblin Fort"
– The sixth sign
Once Katia enters the Goblin Fort, a Hobgoblin in a watchtower spots her and sounds an alarm by hitting his club against the tower. A Sand Golem and some more goblins become aware Katia's presence, so the boss battle of the Plains of Rowahl starts.
After Katia defeats the Sand Golem and its goblin followers, the mission ends.
SpoilersAfter clearing the Plains of Rowahl, a new location appears on the World Map.{| class="quote" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="border:1px solid white; background:#f8e9ae; tcolor:black; -moz-border-radius:7px; padding:0; margin:.5em 1em .5em 1em; width:auto"

"Well, well… You've made it this far, and that means you've learned at least the basics of card handling.
I am called Gurd, and this is my shop. You have seen the Black Fog and the monsters that dwell within.
All of Argwyll will fall unless the fog is stopped. And only a Runestone-bearer can hope to defeat it.
Which means, my dear, that it is up to you. I wish it was your father I was telling this to…
But come… I'll wager there's more to you than just pretty dresses and fancy jewelry.
King Feobane is on his way to meet with King Zelnan. I believe the goal is to work out a shared strategy.
Your father does not have a Runestone, and that means that he cannot defeat the enemy he faces now.
If you are going to catch up to your father, you must start your search in Blessoon.
I will be here, tending to my shop. Stop by anytime… I've got all the cards you could want."
– Gurd
After leaving, another new location appears on the World Map.
SpoilersTalking to Gurd during certain points will give the player an opportunity to unlock optional levels.
If Katia returns to the Apothecary once Blessoon appears on the World Map and talks to Gurd, the old crone will ask the Princess if she'd like to hear a story.{| class="quote" border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" style="border:1px solid white; background:#f8e9ae; tcolor:black; -moz-border-radius:7px; padding:0; margin:.5em 1em .5em 1em; width:auto"

Legend has it that a great treasure lies buried in the desert, just waiting to be discovered.
They say that recently, sand worms have been attacking anyone who enters that desert.
Of course, the only people to travel to the Gromtull Desert are ruffians and greedy treasure hunters.
It's probably not part of your royal duties to help them, but…"

If Gurd is spoken to while all available optional levels have been cleared and there are no new ones available to unlock, she will give Katia some advice instead. "The Runestones have been passed down from generation to generation within the five royal families.
It is written in the scrolls that a kingdom will always prosper, as long as it retains the Runestone.
Many people believe that the Runestones were created to keep someone or something from being locked up.
The truth of the matter is that no one really knows who made the Runestones, or for what purpose."

"It is time you learned how to execute a Capture Throw.
Line up so you are facing the target. Press the L Button in combination with the A, B, X, or Y button.
If the card you throw hits an enemy, it will cause a tiny amount of damage.
But… if the damage is enough to finish off the enemy, you will seal that enemy into a card.
If you successfully trap an enemy in a card, that card will be in your deck for your use.
I should warn you that the Capture Throw won't work on every enemy you face.
You need at least one Magic Stone to make a Capture Throw work.
If you don't have any Magic Stones, it won't work, so don't bother."

"Report on Bhashea
One of the Five Kingdoms,
Bhashea, has been
completely overrun by the
Black Fog.
Due to the danger involved,
it was not possible to
conduct a first-hand

Refugees reported seeing a
woman wearing black

The whereabouts of the

We believe the Runestone
has either been lost, or is
in possession of the

"Report on the concept of
Three Deities
According to certain
sacrilegious doctrines, two
other deities exist, in
addition to our god.
According to this theory,
there was a bitter struggle
between the God of Creation
and the [God of Destruction].
The conflict ended when the
two gods imprisoned each
other on separate
continents.
The source is dubious, but
some aspects of the tale
agree with the True

People living on the edge of civilization found, to their astonishment, that where before there had only been void, now there was land.
When news of the discovery reached the Queen of Alanjeh in her castle, she remembered the words of the God of Creation
The two lands became one, and prospered. And the people loved their wise and beautiful queen."
