The Upper Chambers (Japanese: 鍵精製場, かぎせいせいじょう, Kagi Seiseijou [lit. "Key Refinery"]) is a location in Lost Kingdoms II found within the region of Kendaria. It is the first of two levels that take place in the Runestone Caverns, and is the fifth location visited in the main story.
Appearance
The Upper Chambers is a set of chambers in the Runestone Caverns. These chambers are composed of blue-gray stone, and are filled with ice crystal formations that oddly glow.
Some water flows through the largest of the open spaces in the Upper Chambers. One of the streams has a decorated stone sluice gate built over it that controls the water level in the Lower Chambers, and the other flows in front of a bank holding ancient ruins.
The ancient ruins are composed of two small sets of round stairs on the side of the bank, some small, damaged pillars, and a giant set of three statues, each resting in a niche. Each of these statues appear to be figures sitting down on thrones. The middle statue appears to depict a giant figure, and while its lower half resembles that of a human, it lacks a human upper-half. The two other statues on either side depict smaller, more human-looking figures that are identical to each other.
Summary
After passing through Kendarie Fortress,Tara, Sol, Victor, and the Band of the Scorpion finally reached the Runestone Caverns, where Victor planned to steal all of the Runestones produced there as revenge for being ambushed by the Kendarie Warriors at Bhashea High Road. However, this plan came to another standstill, as the way further down the caverns was blocked by a locked iron gate.
While most of the Band of the Scorpion were waiting by the gate, Tara wandered through the Upper Chambers and found Sol at the highest point of the Runestone Caverns. He gave Tara a Stone Golem card he found, knowing Tara could make use of it. When spoken to again, Sol mentioned how he had a bad feeling about the Runestone Caverns, and thought it might be better for them all to leave.
Tara went back down to the first floor of the Upper Chambers, added the Stone Golem card to her deck, and used the card's power to take on the form of the monster it depicted. After doing so, she got close to where the locked gate was located and smashed it, scaring Victor and the bandits as she did. Once she changed back to normal, Victor shocked and in disbelief, as he had heard stories of Runestone Masters that could change shape, but he didn't think it was possible until he saw Tara do it.
Once things had calmed down a little, Tara, Victor, and the Band of the Scorpion began to travel down into the Lower Chambers of the Runestone Caverns.

Area Progression
Locked Gate
To complete the mission of the Upper Chambers of the Runestone Caverns, Tara must find a way to pass the locked gate in the room at the level's entrance. Reaching the highest point of the level will take Tara to Sol and two Red Fairies next to a Magic Booster. Tara will be given a Stone Golem card after she has talked to Sol, which she can use to destroy obstacles.
Adding the Stone Golem card to the deck, and then approaching the gate while using it will start a cutscene where Tara smashes the gate down. After the cutscene is finished, the mission will end and Victor, Sol, and the Band of the Scorpion will no longer be in the Upper Chambers.
Sluice Gate (optional)
There is a sluice gate in the largest room on the first floor of the Upper Chambers. There is a switch nearby that can change the position of the sluice gate, and a Red Fairy is also close by.
Interacting with the sluice gate switch will alter the water level in a room in the Lower Chambers. If the sluice gate is left up, this room will be flooded, and if it is lowered, the water in the room will be drained. The sluice gate is up when entering the Upper Chambers for the first time, so the room in the Lower Chambers will stay flooded if the switch is not interacted with.
By leaving the sluice gate open, the water level will stay high, making it possible for Tara to open two chests above the water. One can be opened by crossing wooden crates floating along the water's surface, but the other chest can't be opened until Tara has either a Jumping or Flying Transform type card.
By lowering the sluice gate, more can be obtained when entering the Lower Chambers for the first time. The water will recede, allowing Tara to open one chest and collect a Red Fairy.
Magic Boosters (optional)
There are two Magic Boosters in the Upper Chambers. The first can be found on the first floor, in a room before the path leading to the second floor. The second is found on the second floor, close to where Sol will be before the Lower Chambers is unlocked. Using Power, Transform type cards with the Magic Boosters will allow Tara to break the large crystal formations. However, the Magic Boosters won't function until Tara interacts with the switch in Ruldo Forest.
The first Magic Booster can be used to obtain a Gorgon card, the second can be used to get Land Shark card in the US and PAL versions of Lost Kingdoms II. In RUNE II, the Japanese version, instead of there being a red chest containing Land Shark card near the second Magic Booster, there is a blue chest containing the Eyes of the Butterfly, Beyond the Fortress Music Card.
Ruins (optional)
In the largest room on the first floor, there are ruins on a bank across a stream. These ruins can only be reached once Tara has obtained a Flying, Transform type card. In this area are two chests, a Red Fairy, and an enemy Brine Dragon. the chest by the stairs contains a Baba Yaga card, while the one on the left side of the statue holds a Witchlette card.
Brine Dragon (optional)
In the US and PAL versions of Lost Kingdoms II, the Brine Dragon has no specific purpose, but defeating it will raise EXP and capturing it will allow Tara to collect its card.
In RUNE II, the Japanese version of Lost Kingdoms II, slaying the Brine Dragon is part of a sidequest for unlocking the Temple of Sharacia. The Amber Dragon of Fossil Boneyard and the Black Dragon of the Krasheen Mountains must also be slain. Once all three of these dragons are defeated, talking to a priest at the left of the mural in Grenfoel Cathedral will unlock the temple.
In RUNE II, the defeat of the Brine Dragon also counts as completing a mission, so defeating it will give another chance to access the Level Bonus for the Upper Chambers. The Brine Dragon will respawn whenever the level is entered, so this optional mission can be repeated at anytime.

Trivia
- The Upper Chambers has two nearly identical textures for the map of its first floor.
- Although impossible to see through normal gameplay, in the largest room on the first floor, there is an extra large crystal formation underneath each of the ones on the surface.
- When the Band of the Scorpion is in the Upper Chambers, talking to Victor and the Fellow Bandits while Tara is in the form of a Stone Golem will trigger unique responses, and the two bandits closest to the gate visibly panic when spoken to. The bandit by the Kendarie Runestones is also meant to visibly panic while talking to him as a Stone Golem, but due to a glitch in the US version, speaking to him will cause his animations to stop completely. This error was fixed in RUNE II, the Japanese version.
