Trivia

  • The Mermaid card is one of five cards that totally replaced others from Lost Kingdoms. The Mermaid replaced the Water Bird card.
  • The Mermaid's design is most likely based on manatees and sirens.
  • Manatees are marine mammals that were mistakenly identified as mermaids by sailors, including Christopher Columbus. They are part of the order Sirenia, which was named after the sirens.
  • Sirens are creatures from Greek mythology said to lead sailors to their doom with their songs. Early depictions of sirens were of birds with human faces that could be either male or female, but later on they were often shown as more human-like female creatures; some playing musical instruments, usually harps or lyres. After a while, they were depicted as being part fish instead of bird, so they became associated with mermaids.
